LETICIA, COLOMBIA (AMAZON RAINFOREST)

Leticia is the gateway into the Amazon Rainforest! Being in the Amazon was one of the most phenomenal experiences of my life. It is hard to put into words the feelings I experienced while floating through the Amazon River, falling asleep to the sound of a torrential downpour, and having the opportunity to see Amazonian wildlife up close and personal. Especially since it’s just a short flight from Bogotá, this is something you simply cannot skip during your time in Colombia!

Attractions:

  • George of the Jungle Amazon Tour: I highly recommend going through this tour company for your Amazon excursion.  The tour I did was 4 days and 3 nights and cost me 800,000 COP (about $235 USD). That said, there are plenty of tour operators and trip options in town depending on your price range and the amount of time you have.  It was hard for me to book a tour in advance, before arriving to Leticia, so I would recommend walking around town and price shopping once you arrive. • This super small Amazonian town is right on the border of Colombia, Brazil, and Peru.  There aren’t an abundance of activities to do here other than check out the Amazon but the town has a really relaxing vibe.  There is no need to spend more than a night in the actual town in my opinion.

  • Note: When you land in Leticia, all tourists are required to pay a tourist tax (32,000 COP as of December 2018).

  • Other spots to check out: Tabatinga (small town just across Brazil’s border), Parque Santander, and Bioparque Etuena.

Accommodation:

  • I spent all of my nights in a hammock fit with a mosquito net in the rainforest so I don’t have any hostel recommendations here.

Transportation:

  • The most efficient way to get to Leticia is by flying.  That said, it wasn’t the cheapest flight. I flew round trip from Bogotá for $300 USD via LATAM.

  • Vasquez Cobo International Airport (LET) is a 30 minute walk from Leticia’s city center. A motorbike or taxi ride is 5-10 minutes and costs around 5,000 COP.

Mad photo cred to my friend, Laura! She took the photos of: the tree frog at night, me at sunset, and the spider on the leaf!
