NINH BINH, VIETNAM
Once considered Northern Vietnam’s hidden gem, Ninh Binh is quickly becoming a tourist favorite and it’s not hard to see why! I didn’t even have this small town on my original itinerary but once I spoke to some fellow travelers, it became clear that Ninh Binh could not be skipped. If you’re looking to relax and soak in some culture, Ninh Binh is your spot!
Attractions:
Trang An Boat Tour: This tour will take you through gorgeous caves, rivers, temples, etc. The boat is paddled by a Vietnamese native and is very calming. This costs 150,000 VND or less than $7 USD.
Hang Mua Viewpoint: Arguably the most beautiful view I got in all of Vietnam! Rent a motorbike, grab a map, and make your way over here. You’ll have to hike up about 30 minutes but believe me, it’s well worth it! There are caves here that you can explore, too. This costs 100,000 VND plus 3,000 VND to park your motorbike.
Rent a Motorbike: I wouldn’t suggest renting one in a big city like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City but to be able to ride a motorbike through the Vietnamese countryside is remarkable! Including gas, I didn’t spend more than $8 USD to rent one for the entire day.
Other activities in the area: Cuc Phuong National Park, Van Long Nature Reserve, Bich Dong Pagoda, Hoa Lu, and Phat Diem Cathedral.
Accommodation:
Ninh Binh Central Hostel: This hostel is very well-located and has lovely staff. They also serve food and the beds are super comfortable!
Transportation:
Hanoi is 2.5 hours by train from Ninh Binh and costs 180,000 VND.
Phong Nha is 7 hours by bus from Ninh Binh and costs 200,000 VND.
