PAI, THAILAND

IMG_6413.JPG

Pai is my favorite travel destination in Thailand because of its wide open nature and ambiance. Locals here are cheerful and rarely in a hurry; their contentedness to be alive and enjoyment of the present moment are both extremely admirable! This small town has a lot to offer from ethical elephant visits to motorbike rides to the surrounding waterfalls and jungle. And yes, it’s all amazing!

Attractions:

  • Pai Canyon: Arguably Pai’s greatest attraction!  This peaceful canyon has many narrow hiking trails along the ledges of cliffs that provide some spectacular views! To get here by motorbike, head south from town on 1095 for about 7km - it’s a short ride!

  • Land Split: This is an interesting phenomena that needs some explanation. Earthquakes in 2008, 2009, and 2011 caused the land to fissure. Since the land owner could no longer farm the land, he turned it into a tourist attraction that is free to the public! You can walk around the area for as long as you’d like through cracks and crevices - it’s very cool! After you’ve walked around, you can meet the farmer and his family to drink some homemade fruit juices! By motorbike, take 1095 south for 5km and then turn right - you’ll see a sign to direct you.

  • Conserve Natural Forests: There are a lot of unethical elephant sanctuaries across Thailand in which you can ride and bathe elephants.  Conserve Natural Forests is different. Here, you cannot ride or bathe elephants but you can feed them plenty of bananas (which they surprisingly love) and plant a tree, too! There is an elephant here who roams around the area without fences - she is free to do as she pleases! The cost of this excursion is $35 USD (1,000 THB) and includes transportation to and from town.

  • Chedi Phra That Mae Yen: You can either walk or take a motorbike to this temple from town - it’s only about 1km away. Once here, walk up the staircase to get a remarkable view of Pai’s landscape - it’s best at sunrise or sunset!

  • Night Market: Pai has one of the better night markets in all of Southeast Asia - plenty of great food and souvenirs here!

  • Sai Ngam Hot Spring: This nature preserve with thermal baths is 45 minutes by motorbike from town; entrance costs 50 THB (less than $2 USD). The adventurous ride alone makes this journey worth it!

  • Pam Bok Waterfall: This is the closest waterfall to Pai’s town center! To get here, head south on 1095 and turn right like you’re going to the Land Split. Pam Bok is 10 minutes past the Land Split.

  • Mae Yen Waterfall: The trailhead to this hike is 10 minutes by motorbike from town - it picks up here, next to Wonderland Camping). From here, the hike to the waterfall is 3 hours one-way. Although it’s worth the views, it is also quite the commitment!

  • Other things to see include: Pai Historical Bridge, Mo Paeng Waterfalls, and Yun Lai Viewpoint.

Accommodation:

  • Hotel - Pai Village Boutique Resort: Whether you are looking to stay in a guest room or bungalow, Pai Village is your spot. This eco-resort has a swimming pool, massage room, large kitchen, and plenty of hammocks. It is also located in the middle of town and home to one of Pai’s most popular restaurants, The Blue Ox!

  • Hostel - Deejai Pai Backpackers: This hostel is 5 minutes outside of town by motorbike and if you haven’t rented one yet, the hostel pickup truck can scoop you up in town. Deejai Pai is extremely spacious with plenty of hammocks to relax around by day and a fire pit to relax around by night. The nature and seclusion here make for a chill, laid back stay.
