SKAGEN, DENMARK
Skagen is a calm, relaxing city of less than 10,000 people in Northern Denmark. The beaches are beautiful, the cuisine is delightful, and the people are super down-to-earth. If you have time to spare during your Scandinavian travels and are looking for a quiet place to spend a few days, Skagen is your spot!
Attractions:
Råbjerg Mile: Welcome to the largest migrating sand dune in Denmark! Each year, strong winds push the dunes 15m towards Grenen. I recommend spending a few hours hiking around; you feel as though you are walking through the desert!
Grenen: Denmark’s northernmost point is where two seas converge - the Skagerrak and the Kattegat. The collision of waves is clearly visible to the naked eye! It is a super cool experience to stand with one foot in each sea while you watch the waves crash between your legs! Keep your eyes peeled for sun-bathing seals while you are here.
Catch a Sunset: Just 2.5 miles (4km) west from the center of town, walk or ride a bike to Gammel Skagen Strand. As you can see from the photos on this page, the sunset here is gorgeous!
Live Music: Every Friday and Saturday at Skagen Bryghus, there are live music performances. Grab a beer and enjoy yourself!
Other attractions include: Sand-Covered Church, Skagens Museum, Ørnereservatet (Eagleworld), Anchers Hus, and Skagen Gray Lighthouse.
Accommodation:
Danhostel Skagen: A member of the prestigious Hostelling International, you can expect a cozy experience here! The facilities are pristine and the staff members are lovely. It is also just a 20-minute walk from both the train station and harbor!
