VANG VIENG, LAOS

Vang Vieng is a small town in Central Laos surrounded by jungle, limestone mountains, and caves. Adventure and nature seekers alike will feel at home here and find themselves never wanting to leave! Rent a motorbike, throw on a helmet, and explore this place to your heart’s desire! You won’t regret making a pit stop here!

Attractions:

  • Blue Lagoon(s): There are three of these - all reachable via motorbike (in which you can rent for an entire day for $6 USD)!  Lagoon 1 is a 20 minute ride from town and will be PACKED with tourists.  There’s a rope swing and zip-lining here. Lagoon 2 is 10 minutes further and is much bigger/less crowded. The group I was with had the whole place to ourselves! There’s a rope swing, a diving platform, and a raft to float on. Lagoon 3 is 30 minutes further and has even more to offer than the second lagoon. We opted for Lagoon 2 and loved it! The 3 lagoons cost 10,000 LAK each (a bit more than $1). I highly recommend!

  • Pha Ngern Silver Cliff Mountain Hike: This is a tough hike (it took us an hour) but the view is absolutely incredible!  Only 15 minutes from town (on the way to the lagoons), the 10,000 LAK hike is well worth it! Heading out from town on the main road, you will need to make a right turn. It doesn’t have the biggest sign so keep your eyes peeled!

  • Kaeng Nyui Waterfall: This waterfall is a 30 minute motorbike ride outside of town. Worth checking out!

  • Other activities include: Hiking in Tham Chang Caves, riding in a hot air balloon, getting a massage (1 hour for $6 USD), and renting an ATV. There used to be tour in which tourists got excessively drunk while floating down the river in tubes (stopping at “bars” along the way) but this has since been shut down for safety reasons - who would have thought?!

Accommodation:

  • Easy Go Hostel: Good location, solid common area, and cheap. A bit grungy - but you’re in the jungle of Laos after all!

Transportation:

  • Vientiane is 3 hours by bus from Vang Vieng and costs 50,000 LAK.

  • Luang Prabang is 4 hours by bus from Vang Vieng and costs 80,000 LAK.

    • If possible, travel between Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang on a dry day. I went the day after it rained really hard and was stuck in a bad traffic jam on the side of a cliff for hours since vehicles kept getting stuck in the mud - not the safest but the views were incredible!

  • Phonsavan (the base city for visiting the Plain of Jars) is 8 hours by bus from Vang Vieng. Prices for this trip vary.
